Wheezer chases his runaway puppies across town after they bolt toward every ringing bell they hear, while the rest of the gang sneaks into a high-society pet show where Farina works and turns it into bedlam.

An early-sound Our Gang short from director Robert F. McGowan and producer Hal Roach, joining the series’ unforced child comedy to a Depression-era gag about scrubbed kids upending a rich people’s dog show. It was selected for the National Film Registry.

Background

Pups Is Pups is a 1930 Our Gang short directed by Robert F. McGowan for producer Hal Roach and distributed by MGM. It was the hundredth Our Gang short released and the first of the 1930-31 season, arriving early in the series’ transition to sound. The plot splits in two: Wheezer chases his runaway puppies across town after they bolt toward every ringing bell they hear, while the rest of the gang, with Farina working there as a page, sneaks into a high-society dog show.

What to watch for

Once inside, the kids turn the genteel show into chaos by smuggling in their own menagerie of pets — frogs, turtles, mice, ducks, and even a pig — and letting them loose among the pedigreed dogs and their well-dressed owners. The sequence plays as a small class joke as much as a slapstick one, pitting the gang’s unglamorous backyard animals against a roomful of pampered show dogs and the society crowd that prizes them. The film was later selected for the National Film Registry, part of the broader recognition of the Our Gang series’ place in American comedy.
