US public domain — Hal Roach Studios' late-1960s financial troubles meant renewal was never filed for its 1940-41 titles.

An heiress and her houseguest are targeted by a killer stalking a gloomy mansion, and after the wrong woman is murdered, her ghost recruits the only man who can see her — the endlessly put-upon Cosmo Topper — to catch the culprit.

The third and final entry in the Topper series, Topper Returns drops the original films’ gentle marital comedy in favor of an old-dark-house murder mystery, giving Roland Young’s flustered Cosmo Topper a proper whodunit to stumble through alongside Joan Blondell and Carole Landis.

Background

Topper Returns is a 1941 comedy directed by Roy Del Ruth and is the third and final film in the Topper series. The earlier entries were Topper (1937) and Topper Takes a Trip (1938), and all of them are based on characters created by Thorne Smith. Roland Young returns as the flustered Cosmo Topper, and Billie Burke is also in the cast. This entry drops the series’ gentle marital comedy in favor of an old-dark-house murder mystery. Joan Blondell and Carole Landis co-star. The film runs about eighty-eight minutes and was released in 1941.

What to watch for

Look for the way the film frames its murder mystery within the ghost comedy: a dead heiress recruits Cosmo to help catch the killer who mistook her for another woman. The gloomy mansion gives the film its atmosphere, and Young’s flustered comic style is central to the humor as he is pushed into the investigation. Blondell and Landis bring a lighter tone to the proceedings. The mix of genres can feel uneven, but the comic timing and the ghost effects remain the main appeal. Notice how the film shifts from the series’ earlier domestic humor to a more conventional whodunit, which is the defining change of this final entry.
