A childhood killing binds three friends in a small Pennsylvania town: Martha, who profited from covering it up; Walter, the husband who helped bury the secret; and Sam, a drifter whose return after eighteen years threatens to unearth it.

Kirk Douglas made his screen debut here as the weakest point of the triangle, a husband who married guilt instead of love — a fitting entry for an actor who spent the next decade playing men undone by their own compromises.
