A widower unknowingly murders members of his own household during trances triggered by glimpses of his institutionalized, brain-damaged wife wandering the grounds — and an innocent man is executed for one of his crimes before the truth surfaces.
By 1941, Bela Lugosi had slid from Universal’s prestige horror to Monogram’s assembly line, but Joseph H. Lewis — a good decade before The Big Combo — still wrings real unease from the cheap sets and the sight of Lugosi sleepwalking toward his next victim.
