A giant, top-hatted mosquito torments a sleeping man through the night, growing fatter with each bite until it finally bursts, in one of the earliest character-driven animated films.

Animation pioneer Winsor McCay debuted the film as part of his vaudeville act before Universal gave it a belated theatrical release in 1916; its fluid, weighty animation of the mosquito’s body helped establish that a drawn character could move with real physical presence.
