A devoted housewife spends one increasingly frantic afternoon trying to intercept a letter her bedridden, paranoid husband has mailed accusing her of adultery and plotting to poison him. As the hours tick by and the letter moves closer to the mailbox, small mishaps keep making her look exactly as guilty as he claims.

Shot in tight close-up and unfolding in something close to real time, Cause for Alarm! wrings suburban paranoia out of a single afternoon and a single wrong letter, with Loretta Young carrying nearly the entire picture opposite a menace of her own husband’s making.

Background

Cause for Alarm! was directed by Tay Garnett and produced by MGM, with Loretta Young in the lead opposite Barry Sullivan. The film is largely confined to a single house, and its real-time structure made it an economical production within the studio system. Garnett directed a range of genre pictures across his career, and this one is usually discussed as a compact suspense drama. Bruce Cowling and Art Baker round out the cast.

What to watch for

Most of the film stays inside one house and follows a woman as she tries to intercept a letter before it reaches the mailbox. The real-time structure creates the tension, and small mishaps keep making her look guilty to her husband and to the audience. Loretta Young carries nearly the whole picture, and her performance moves between desperation and composure as the afternoon runs down. Watch how the camera stays close on her, and how the mailbox and the clock become the stakes of each scene. The bedridden, paranoid husband is the source of the threat, and his suspicions shape everything she does.
